Travel with Ease: The Essential Checklist for Flying with Your Pet

Seasonal & Travel Care

Taking your furry friend on a plane can feel like a big challenge. Between airline rules and your pet’s comfort, there is a lot to remember! At Joy with Paws, we want to make your journey as smooth as possible.

Follow this simple checklist to ensure you and your pet arrive at your destination happy and relaxed.

1. Check Airline Requirements Early

Every airline has different rules. Some allow pets in the cabin, while others require them to fly in the cargo hold.

  • Call Ahead: Book your pet’s “seat” as soon as you buy your ticket, as flights have a limit on how many pets can board.

  • Health Certificates: Most airlines require a vet-signed health certificate issued within 10 days of your flight.

2. Get an Airline-Approved Pet Carrier

Your pet’s carrier will be their “home” for several hours. It needs to be safe and comfortable.

  • Size Matters: For cabin travel, the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you. Ensure your pet can stand up and turn around.

  • Ventilation: Choose a carrier with mesh windows on at least three sides so your pet can breathe easily and see you.

3. Pack the Travel Essentials

Don’t get caught at 30,000 feet without the basics! Keep these in your carry-on bag:

  • Collapsible Bowls: Space-saving bowls are perfect for giving your pet water during layovers.

  • Portable Waste Bags: Always have these ready for “potty breaks” before and after the flight.

  • A Familiar Scent: Put a t-shirt you’ve worn or their favorite small blanket inside the carrier. Your scent will help calm their nerves.

4. Calm the Pre-Flight Jitters

Flying can be loud and scary for pets.

  • Practice at Home: Let your pet sleep in their carrier for a few nights before the trip so they feel safe inside it.

  • Calming Aids: Consider natural calming sprays or treats. Always talk to your vet before giving your pet any new supplements.

5. The “Joy with Paws” Flight Checklist:

  • Airline-approved carrier

  • Current vaccination records

  • Collapsible water and food bowls

  • Comfortable harness and leash

  • ID tags with your current phone number

  •  Small bag of their regular food
